D-BHB is the ketone the human body produces on its own during fasting, sleep, and sustained exertion. It is a preferred fuel for the brain. The obstacle has never been the molecule. It has been making the molecule taste acceptable, dose meaningfully, and cost little enough to put in something people drink every day.

VitaNav's composition pairs D-BHB in its free acid form with R-1,3-butanediol in equal parts. These are the same two moieties that make up the ketone monoester used in most published human research, (R)-3-hydroxybutyl (R)-3-hydroxybutyrate, but they are not joined by an ester bond. In the monoester that bond hydrolyzes on ingestion anyway, releasing the same two molecules to be metabolized individually. The practical consequence is metabolic equivalence: the D-BHB fraction raises blood ketones quickly, the butanediol fraction converts in the liver and extends the tail, and the published monoester literature applies to the composition directly rather than by analogy.

It is a non-salt form, so there is no added sodium or potassium load and no L-BHB isoform of the kind found in ketone salts.
